1-C's Wildlife Habitat. Ella Kate has had a great 1st grade year - we love her energetic creative teacher - Mrs. Sanders. Ella Kate's class, 1-C, created a Don't Litter Club at Burruss and they are also doing a STEM (Science Technology Engineering, and Mathematics) project to create a Wildlife Habitat. Their class selected a 10x15 area that was overgrown with weeds, etc., designed a layout for their garden (this included a rock lined walking path, etc.) and got to work digging. The idea is to plant native plants to Georgia that will attract pollinators (i.e. butterflies, etc.). I got to join them on their adventure and get my hands dirty clearing weeds, etc. Their class sold hand made bracelets to raise money to purchase plants, top soil, etc. Love it that her teacher encourages such hands on learning. Dave, whom used to work at the Chattahoochee Nature Center, during the summers in college was able to use the money their class raised to purchase the plants. Dave's old boss at CNC who has managed their green house for 30+ years was a great help in selecting native plants to Georgia that would work best for their project. Thanks Dave and CNC for your support.

Sadly I did not take a before picture of this area but it was completing overgrown. These kids worked!
Ella Kate and her teacher digging away.
It was almost impossible to get a picture of her face b/c she would not stop digging :) Go Ella Kate. Proud of you.
The best smile she could muster up while I was disturbing her work. :)
Love Mrs. Sanders. A great teacher who is not afraid to get her hands dirty.
They all worked together so well.
So proud of their hard work.
Good Job 1-C. They got the area all cleaned out.
Next stop to plant their native pollinators.
My little book worm. She loves the Magic Treehouse Book series (thank you LeLe for introducing it to her) and has already read 17 books in the series. :)

John was thrilled to get to eat lunch by Ella Kate in her classroom. He totally thought he was a 1st grader.
