By the time Sunday, our last day in NYC, rolled around Ella Kate was a master at hailing a cab and hopping on the Subway! She was a good map reader and paid close attention. After a healthy breakfast at Dunkin Donuts, Ella Kate's choice, we hopped on the Subway and headed South. Our destination was the South Ferry stop on the Red line - we wanted to see the Statue of Liberty up close and in person!
We hopped off the subway and started walking towards the water. We spotted this big beautiful boat and knew we had to ride it over to see the Statue of Liberty - an amazing representation of our freedom.
Miss Priss has her ticket and is ready to board the ship!
All Ready to set sail to Liberty Island and Ellis Island.
We are getting closer.
We made it.
We each had a hand held audio device that told the story of how the Statue of Liberty arrived in America and all it symbolized! They gave Ella Kate a kid version which she paid very close attention too. Although I did not realize how close of attention she was paying until at one point she tapped me on the shoulder and said "Mommy, did you realize the statue of liberty is only as thick as 2 pennies so that it can withstand the high winds of this island". Wow - never under estimate what kids are capable of learning. She is a smart cookie.
My girl and I.
Nana and her sweet granddaughter.
The girls.
One last walk around the monument before hopping back on our Ferry.
After we got back to land we caught the red subway line and hopped off at the 9/11 memorial. You absolutely get chills as you walk up to the memorial.
Ella Kate standing near where one of the towers used to be. Gives me the chills just typing it.
The monument consists of a beautiful courtyard that is completely closed off until you enter (you basically have to go through airport type security to get in) and two pools like in the picture above where each of the towers used to stand.
The names of all that were killed are engraved around the pools. It was very quiet inside the memorial and a good lesson for Ella Kate to understand truly what a memorial was.
We shall never forget and will always honor. After our visit to the 9/11 memorial we took the subway back to our hotel, grabbed our bags and caught a cab to LaGuardia airport. We had a wonderful time, lots of laughs, and many memories made. But we were excited to get back home and get ready for the man in the big red suite to come and visit us.
One last picture I took on the plane ride home that I sent to Dave. When the stewardess went over the safety rules - Ella Kate paid attention. Shortly after this picture was taken Ella Kate was sound asleep before the plane ever left the runway and Nana and I had to wake her up when we landed in ATL. I hope this trip was as special to Ella Kate as it was to Nana and I. We sure do love you Ella Kate and we could not have asked for a better travel companion - it was truly our pleasure to take you on this trip!
